Dear Friends and Prayer Warriors,

Since we have been here in Cofradía, we have gone to preach the gospel and distribute gospel literature in at least eleven villages in the area. These villages range in size from just a few houses to 80 - 100 homes or more. Many of them require driving a good distance over rough mountain roads in order to reach them. These evangelistic trips are always a blessing and worthwhile though when we see how open and receptive the people usually are to the gospel. In May we went up to the Merendón mountains with a group from Gethsemane Baptist Mission from San Pedro and several people trusted Christ as their Savior in the small village of Peñitas Arriba.

We have gone to San Joaquín several times and the children always greet us enthusiastically. On one trip out in March we arrived to find about 50 of them still in class in a small, two room schoolhouse. As soon as class ended they all came running over and snatched up all of the tracts and John and Romans that we had left! When was the last time you saw that in the US?

The Merendón mountain range that surrounds us is home to 40,000 people living in more then 60 different communities. Most of these villages are only accessible with a 4x4 vehicle. We have made several trips up, and after asking other missionaries and pastors, we learned that there is not a single Baptist church in these villages. Catholicism is the the dominant religion, and of course the Pentecostals and even Jehovah’s false Witnesses are present.

I didn’t know all of this when we came to Cofradía four years ago. We are so close to these communities, it would seem like a crime to me to not do all that we can to try and reach them with the gospel. If we are going to go up on a regular basis and try to reach the villages that are farther out, we absolutely must have a sturdy, reliable 4x4 truck. These roads are known for being bad, and it only gets worse during rainy season. We are going to be setting aside 5% of our monthly support in a vehicle fund and I would encourage anyone reading to pray about helping financially. Considering what we could sell our truck for, I estimate that we will need at LEAST $5,000 more.

Work on the church property has been progressing well over the last few months. We are currently working on the front of the property and what will be the entrance. It is exciting to see that we are almost halfway there with the wall! We are grateful that God has used a number of churches and individuals, as well as the people here, to bring us this far in our “Nehemiah Project”! Please keep this need in prayer, because “the work is great and large” (Neh. 4:19) and we still have a long way to go.

Rosa Escobar, a lady that Rosy won to the Lord and discipled, is going to begin discipleing another lady who got saved at our Mother’s Day service and is eager to study the Bible. That is part of what discipleship is all about (2 Tim. 2:2).

In funnier news, the JWs have been telling people that I am an ex-JW that was disfellowshipped. Praise the Lord, I have never been associated with them in any way. I must have done something to get under their skin though, but I can’t imagine what.

Thanks for your prayers and support!

Prayer Letter

Dear Friends and Prayer Warriors,
Honduras is now the most violent country in the world. Honduras’ President has done almost nothing to stop the violence and the incredible amount of corruption in the government and police. Drug gangs have now infiltrated every level of government and society. It has become a regular occurrence to hear about five or six people being killed at a time or bodies being found dumped alongside of the road. There is little investigation done by the authorities, and literally 99% of murders go unsolved. I’m not saying this to try and scare anyone, but to praise God for His protection! In spite of the lawless climate, God has kept us safe up to now, please pray for our continued protection!
There is another important issue that directly affects churches here, including our work. A law was passed here at the end of 2010 that many fear could lead to persecution against certain churches (like independent Baptists). The law only legally recognizes churches that are part of the corrupt, ecumenical Confraternidad Evangelica (Evangelical Fraternity) and leaves the door open for the government to shut down churches as "illegal" that do not belong to the Fraternity. Many groups, independent Baptists included, have complained to the government about it and tried taking it to court, but the Honduran Supreme Court has just been ignoring the issue, hoping it will die down. These are interesting times to be in Honduras!
We are still praying about the wall that we need to build around the church property. Just recently we got some quotes on materials and labor, and it looks like it is going to cost us about $8000 to finish the wall.  After we finish the wall we can start to plan the construction of the church building. Every month construction materials get more and more expensive, so we want to finish this as soon as possible. Giving at church has been steadily increasing for over a year now and there are people that have given sacrificially towards this. But, with the low wages that people here make and the relatively high cost of building materials, we’ll need your prayers to be able to finish this!
Jesus told us to pray for laborers for the harvest. As time goes by, my family and I have an ever increasing burden to reach Cofradía and its surrounding areas with the gospel. We praise the Lord for several professions of faith in Christ during the month of January while out door to door to door soulwinning. We are also thankful that more people are getting a burden to reach others with the gospel. However, there is still a great deal left to do and we need you to pray with us that the Lord of the harvest would raise up more laborers to send into His field! We have even prayed specifically that another missionary family would join us to form a team and help reach this field more effectively. Thanks for your prayers and support!
In Christ,
